Textile Design & Motif Making: Taster

Explore textile design and motif making with Glasgow based artist and designer Alice Dansey-Wright, then develop your designs into a simple, zero-waste plant pot.

This one-day taster session introduces students to Alice Dansey-Wright’s process of textile design and motif making including developing design ideas, applying designs to the fabric, and learning about various materials and techniques. Once you have developed your designs, they will be applied to fabric and made into a simple zero-waste planter.

Skill Level

This is a pure beginner level course, which means it's suitable for those with no sewing experience. Machines will be provided.

Sewing Machines

The setting for this course is the relaxing, social atmosphere of The Stitchery Studio, which comes fully equipped with a sewing machine (Janome 230DC) for each student. You are welcome to bring your own if you like. Please let us know in advance.

Outcomes

  • Samples of textile painting with motifs designed by you, and if time allows we will create some basic block-printed samples too.

  • Basic textile design skills; collage for design, motif making and application of textile paint/simple print.

  • The know-how to replicate the process at home so you can create one-of-a-kind textiles.

  • A simple, zero-waste, planter showcasing your very owned motif designs.

You Will Need to Bring

  • *Wear clothing and/or an apron that you don’t mind getting marked with paint

  • Optional: A sketchbook - size and paper weight of your choice (otherwise we will provide A4 paper)

  • Optional: If you have drawing materials that you particularly like to use such as pens or crayons of choice

  • Optional: Preloved garments or scraps of fabric for sampling (otherwise sample squares will be provided)


We Will Provide

  • Sewing machines

  • Sewing supplies (scissors, seam ripper, etc)

  • Fabric for your plant pot

  • Paint for your plant pot

  • A zero waste sewing pattern in the form of a Zine (Designed by Danielle Elsener)

Booking Your Place

To book your place on this one-day workshop, you will pay a non-refundable Booking Deposit of £50 which goes towards the total course cost. The remaining balance is due no later than 14 days PRIOR to course start. If you book after this time we ask that you make the full payment. Please familiarise yourself with our Terms & Conditions before making your booking. Deposits are non-refundable. Please email us for account details.

Subsidised Places

In response to the cost of living crisis, we offer one subsidised seat per class to ease the burden on our community. If this price is inaccessible for you and you are committed to learning, please contact us.

  • During class tea and coffee will be available.

  • All of our classes are suitable for over 18s, younger crafters may be accommodated if accompanied by a participating adult but please contact us before booking

  • If the workshop you were looking at is fully booked drop us an email and we’ll add you to the waiting list.

About Your Tutors

Alice Dansey-Wright

Alice Dansey-Wright is an artist, designer and educator based in Glasgow. Her work is interdisciplinary and she explores the intersection of craft, design and visual art. Over the last 10 years Alice has run ADW Custom as part of her practice. ADW Custom is a garment painting and textile design project and she has collaborated on a number of collections with sustainable brands including Love and Squalor, SQUINT clothing, RE:Jean Denim, Fanfare London, Brother LDN  and Giannina Capitani Knitwear. Alice started ADW Custom by transferring her mural painting skills onto hand painted garments and she has delivered a number of workshops and activities inspired by this technique including Fashion Revolution Week, Glasgow School of Art and Print Shop at Tramway.

Cassandra Belanger

Cassandra Belanger

Cassandra has 14 years of experience hosting workshops in sustainable design and sewing. Her work is an invitation to a more sustainable future and education is at the centre of her creative practice. She is the founder of The Stitchery Studio , is co-founder and Director of the ZWDC and a founding member of Sustainable Fashion Scotland. She is the resident sewing instructor at the Central Scottish School of Craft and a Fashion and Textile Lecturer at Glasgow West College. Her design and teaching practice challenges makers, designers and educators to think through the social and environmental impacts of their practice, exploring issues such as zero waste, intersectionality, transparency, colour therapy, feminism, sizeism, and body image. Cassandra is committed to decolonising her teaching practice.

Cancellation & Course Fees Refund

Because of the popularity of our courses and the limited number of spaces available, we've now introduced a Cancellation & Refund Policy. If you cancel your booking 14 or more full days before the start date of your course or workshop, you will be refunded the balance of your fees. This is equivalent to your full course fees minus your non-refundable deposit.  

If you decide to cancel your place in less than 14 days before the workshop start date or during the workshop, a refund is not guaranteed. In this situation we shall review the circumstances of the cancellation before deciding on an appropriate solution.

If for any reason you change your mind and need to cancel your booking, please email us (info@thestitcherystudio.com) as soon as possible so that we can release your place to someone on the waiting list.
