The Classic Cardigan Workshop

  • The Stitchery 24 Sandyford Place Glasgow, Scotland, G3 7NG United Kingdom (map)

2-day weekend workshop // 10am - 5pm both days // Cost: £140 (includes pattern) // Skill Level: Growing Beginner (and upwards) //  Instructor: Susie Haigh // Project: The Driftless Cardigan (women) or Newcastle Cardigan (men)

Just in time for Autumn and the need for some more layers, we're excited to introduce the Classic Cardigan Workshop; a two-day delve into the wonderful world of knit fabric.

One of the beautiful things about making your own clothes is the variety of fabrics you can use. In this two-day weekend workshop, we'll be delving into the world of knits: the perfect fabric for comfortable, every day clothing. (Psssst....this is not 'knitting', as in what you do with needles and wool, but 'knit' fabric as in jersey).

In the safe hands of Susie Haigh, students will be learning techniques hands-on, and making their very own Driftless Cardigan (for women) or Newcastle Cardigan (for men). Both of which are perfect for layering up in the colder months and, once mastered, will provide a good basis for going on to create more knit fabric garments.

Techniques will include: choosing knit fabric,  sewing with knits (both on a domestic sewing machine and an overlocker), in-seam pockets, attaching sleeves, hems, attaching binding, thread chains, and sewing buttons & buttonholes. Part of this course will also include an introduction to the Coverlock machine; the ultimate method for getting a professional finish on your knit garments.

Skill Level

This is a Growing Beginner course, which means that the minimum requirement is for you to have a basic understanding of how to use a sewing machine. If you've taken one of our Intro to Sewing workshops, or any of our Beginner courses, then you should be fine.
