About This Course

Curious about quilting curves? Ready to dive into free-motion quilting? Join us for a unique three-day in-person workshop led by expert quilt instructor Andrea Belanger (Grams) and her granddaughter Stitchery Founder Cassandra, who began her own sewing journey with Grams at just six years old. Now, they’re teaming up to share their passion, experience, and techniques in this creative and supportive workshop.

Topics Covered

  • Curved Piecing Techniques: Explore a range of curved piecing methods, including an innovative, zero-waste technique inspired by the classic ‘Drunkard’s Path’ quilt block, developed by Danielle Elsener.

  • Free-Motion Quilting: Learn the basics of free-motion quilting and create a sampler that can be transformed into a cushion, wall hanging, or other project.

  • Improvisation and Design: Discover how to embrace playful, improvisational design while maintaining precision.

  • Finishing Tips: Get expert advice on how to beautifully finish your quilted creations, specifically looking at binding finishes.

  • Or a custom creation of your own

Focus:

This workshop emphasises technique over completion. You’ll build foundational skills and confidence to carry into future projects. About your Tutor

Andrea Belanger has been quilting since 1993, drawn to large, intricate patterns and the challenge of recreating designs from just a photograph. Over time, her artistic focus has evolved toward collage wall hangings that capture the beauty of people, animals, and landscapes. A lifelong maker, Andrea began sewing at the age of four and has always found working with her hands to be both creatively fulfilling and mentally therapeutic. She enjoys all aspects of quilting — from design and piecing to the final stitches on both domestic machines and longarms. Since around 2004, Andrea has been teaching quilting, sharing practical tips and a philosophy of “accuracy without pressure,” helping students find success through consistency and enjoy the pride of accomplishing more than they thought possible

Cassandra Belanger (she/her) has 14 years of experience working in sustainable design, textiles and garment construction with a Masters in Fashion + Textiles focussing on zero waste design. Her work is an invitation to a more sustainable future and education is at the centre of her creative practice. She is the Founder of The Stitchery Studio, Co-Founder of the Zero Waste Design Collective and Founding Member of Sustainable Fashion Scotland. She was previously the Resident Sewing Instructor at the Central Scottish School of Craft and a Fashion and Textile Lecturer at Glasgow West College. Her research interests centre around sustainable fashion and textile design education and fashion systems for a post growth economy. Her design and teaching practice explores issues such as zero waste, waste colonialism, transparency, feminism, sizeism, and body image. Cassandra is committed to decolonising her teaching practice.
