The Miette Skirt Course

Students will use learned techniques to construct The Miette Skirt in a fabric of their choice.

What Do I Need to Bring?

For the MIETTE Skirt Course you will need:

• A basic sewing kit (see below)
• Fabric & Thread - Because this is a mini course, we're asking students to bring their chosen fabric to the first class. We've detailed fabric requirements below, but if you have any questions please feel free to get in touch. And remember to pre-wash your fabrics before bringing them along!

Do I Need To Bring a Sewing Machine?

No, but you are welcome to if you wish. We have a Janome CXL301 sewing machine available for each student to use. We also sell a range of Janome machines, and offer discounts on these to our students.

If you're planning on bringing your own machine, please contact us and let us know the make and model. 

How Do I Pay My Balance?

If you booked your place with a deposit, you're balance is due no less than 14 days before your course begins. For instructions on how to pay please visit our balance payments page.

If you're thinking of cancelling your booking, for any reason, please let us know as soon as possible, so that we can offer your place to someone on the waiting list. And also please have a look at our Cancellations & Refunds Policy on the FAQs page before doing this. Thanks.

For this course you'll need a basic sewing kit. You can buy all the items separately or, alternatively, find a ready made kit that includes the essentials, such as this one from IKEA costing just £10. 

If you're purchasing kit items separately, we've listed some essentials below; some of which are available at The Stitchery studio. You can read more about these in our blog post.

• Fabric scissors - We have a small stock of Fiskars Fabric Scissors available at our studio (£19)
• Paper scissors - for cutting patterns
• Seam ripper (you can use embroidery scissors if the tip is sharp) - £3 @ The Stitchery
• Dressmaking pins
• Sewing machine needles (size chart) - £2.50 @ The Stitchery
• Hand sewing needles - £2.25 @ The Stitchery
• Thread (Gutermann Sew-all thread recommended) - Black & White available at The Stitchery
• Tape measure (not the kind Tradesmen use!)
• Sewing gauge - £2.50 @ The Stitchery
• Bobbins (Janome compatible, 50p @ The Stitchery)
• Temporary markers - this could be tailor's chalk, fade or wash-away pen, or tracing paper & wheel. We have a selection of these available for purchase at The Stitchery. 

Because this is a mini course, we're asking students to bring their skirt fabric to the first class. This way you can get crackin' on making your garment from day one. 

Your fabric requirments for the Miette Skirt will depend primarily on two factors:

1. Your own body measurements.
2. The width of your fabric; 44" (115cm) or 60" (150cm).

If you know how to take your Waist and Hip measurements already, or you want to give it a try using the instructions in our Zinnia Blog Post, then please refer to the chart below and use the following guidelines for fabric requirements:

• 60" (150cm) fabric - 2 metres for Sizes 1-6 OR 2.7metres for any larger measurements (Sizes 7 & 8 are 36" and 38" Waist respectively).
• 40" (115cm) fabric - 3 metres covers all sizes.

If you've never taken these body measurements before, and you're a bit unsure, then the best bet is just to bring the larger amount of fabric (2.7m or 3m, depending on the width).

// SHOPPING FOR FABRICS //

Please feel free to pick up your fabric from wherever you like, but we do have some recommendations:

// PRE-WASHING FABRIC //

It's important that you pre-wash your fabric before bringing it to class. This means you will be able to wash your finished project without fear of it shrinking! 

// THREADS // 

Although the all-in-one kits mentioned above do include some basic threads, these tend to be a little flimsy and can create unwanted fluff. For most sewing projects we recommend Gutermann Polyester Sew-all thread or an equivalent product.

Your thread should generally be a colour that matches your main fabric. If you cannot find a match, then always look for a shade darker rather than a shade lighter.

Once you're a little more experienced you may wish to use contrasting thread colours. These are ones that purposely stand out against your main fabric, thereby becoming decorative.
