The True Cost

If you've been around The Stitchery for long enough, you'll know that we're true evangelists of the lifestyle of making your own clothes and choosing only to purchase well made, ethically sourced clothing from the hi-street.

One of the inspirations for this lifestyle choice (which we're still transitioning towards) is a documentary called The True Cost.  This is a story about clothing. It’s about the clothes we wear, the people who make them, and the impact the industry is having on our world. The price of clothing has been decreasing for decades, while the human and environmental costs have grown dramatically. The True Cost is a groundbreaking documentary film that pulls back the curtain on the untold story and asks us to consider: who really pays the price for our clothing?

In November The Stitchery will be hosting a screening of this documentary and a live discussion around the issues raised. We'll be welcoming representatives from Fashion Revolution Scotland, who will be available for a Q&A session after the screening.

The evening is free, but we do ask that you only sign up if you're committed to being there, as we only have a limited amount of space to host people and therefore a limited number of tickets we can make available. We've also noticed in the past that free events are not so well attended, as people are more inclined to book on a whim. So again, please only sign up if you are intending to come to the evening. And if you book a place, then realise you can't make it for some reason, please let us know, so that we can free up another spot.

Fabric & Pattern Swap

On the same evening as the True Cost screening, and in the spirit of sustainable living, we will also be hosting a pattern and fabric swap.

What is this you may ask? This is a chance to bring your unused, unwanted pieces of fabric and sewing patterns, and swap them with other sewers from around the local area. As the old American expression goes: "one man's trash is another's treasure". And this is a really good way for us to practice sustainable ways of recycling what's not being used, rather than always having to look for something new.

The only rules we are putting around the fabric and pattern swap are:

  1. Any fabric pieces must be at least 1metre in length.
  2. Patterns must be either new or used, but uncut - so if you've already used them, but you traced off your size instead of cutting it out, then this is acceptable
  3. Each person may bring up to 5 pieces of fabric and 5 patterns.

As always, the evening will be well served with the usual treats, teas and coffees. Popcorn.

And, apart from coming away with some food for thought, we also hope this will be a fun time for everyone and a chance to meet other sewers from around the local area.

Booking Your Place

As mentioned, the evening is free. But again, we do ask that you only book if you are fully intending to attend. Bookings can be made through our online system below.
